The community of Bardstown is the Seat for Nelson County.

Nelson County was founded in 1784 and was created by taking area from Jefferson County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Nelson had a population of 46,221 people. This is an increase of 6.41% since the last Census (which gave a population of 43,437 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Nelson represented 1% of the total population of Kentucky.
