The community of Greenup is the Seat for Greenup County.

Greenup County was founded in 1803 and was created by taking area from Mason County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Greenup had a population of 35,164 people. This is a decrease of 4.73% since the last Census (which gave a population of 36,910 people in 2010).
