Breckinridge County was founded in 1799 and was created by taking area from Hardin County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Breckinridge had a population of 20,471 people. This is an increase of 2.05% since the last Census (which gave a population of 20,059 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Breckinridge represented 0.46% of the total population of Kentucky.
