The community of Wellington is the Seat for Sumner County.

Sumner County was founded December 20, 1870 and was created by taking area from Butler County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Sumner had a population of 22,810 people. This is a decrease of 5.48% since the last Census (which gave a population of 24,132 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sumner represented 0.85% of the total population of Kansas.
