Cowley County was founded February 26, 1867 and was created by taking area from Butler County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Cowley had a population of 34,784 people. This is a decrease of 4.21% since the last Census (which gave a population of 36,311 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Cowley represented 1.27% of the total population of Kansas.
