Whiteside County was founded in 1836. Whiteside was created by taking area from Jo Daviess and Henry Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Whiteside had a population of 55,215 people. This is a decrease of 5.61% since the last Census (which gave a population of 58,498 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Whiteside represented 0.46% of the total population of Illinois.
