Sangamon County was founded in 1821. Sangamon was created by taking area from Madison and Bond Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Sangamon had a population of 194,882 people. This is a decrease of 1.31% since the last Census (which gave a population of 197,465 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sangamon represented 1.54% of the total population of Illinois.
