Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Dakota City had an population of 817 people. This is a decrease of 3.08% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 10.32% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Dakota City had a population of 843 people (or 8.59% of the total population of Humboldt County). This makes Dakota City the county's 2nd most populous community.
