The community of Des Moines is the seat for Polk County. Des Moines is also the capital of Iowa. Using the Census estimates for 2007<1>, Polk had a population of 418,339 people. This is an increase of 11.27% since the 2000 Census (which gave a population of 375,960 people). At the time of the 2000 Census, Polk represented 12.84% of the total population of Iowa, making it the state's most populous county.
