Madison County was founded January 13, 1846 and was created by taking area from Polk County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Madison had a population of 16,273 people. This is an increase of 3.79% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,679 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Madison represented 0.51% of the total population of Iowa.
