Buena Vista County was founded January 15, 1851. Buena Vista was created by taking area from Clay and Sac Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Buena Vista had a population of 19,690 people. This is a decrease of 2.81% since the last Census (which gave a population of 20,260 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Buena Vista represented 0.67% of the total population of Iowa.
