Audubon County was founded January 15, 1851. Audubon was created by taking area from and Cass (GA) Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Audubon had a population of 5,491 people. This is a decrease of 10.26% since the last Census (which gave a population of 6,119 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Audubon represented 0.2% of the total population of Iowa.
