Sumter County was founded January 8, 1853 and was created by taking area from Marion County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Sumter had a population of 133,772 people. This is an increase of 43.19% since the last Census (which gave a population of 93,420 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sumter represented 0.5% of the total population of Florida.
