Note: All Quarter-dollar coin images from the United States Mint | Coin Issued: October 16, 2000 - the 5th coin released in 2000 Statehood: June 25, 1788 - the 10th State Inscriptions: "Virginia 1788", "Jamestown 1607-2007" Description: To celebrate the quadricentennial of Jamestown, the coin features the ships "Susan Constant", "Godspeed" and the "Discovery". The ships "Susan Constant", "Godspeed" and "Discovery" brought the first English settlers (104 men and boys) to Jamestown. They left London on December 20, 1606 and arrived at Jamestown (named in honor of King James I) on May 12, 1607. At the bottom of the coin is the issue date (2000) and the motto "E Pluribus Unum". The motto is Latin for "Out of Many, One", recognizing that out of the many colonies (or states) emerged a single nation. Engravers: The Reverse design (the State-side of the Quarter) was created by Edgar Z. Steever (search an actual coin for the engraver's initials: 'ezs'). The original Observe design (the front or Washington-side of the Quarter) was created by John Flanagan and first appeared in 1932. For the 50 State Quarters series, Flanagan's design was modified by William Cousins: the portrait of Washington was slightly reduced to accomodate the moving of the legends from the Reverse to the Obverse.
