Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Lamar had an population of 7,638 people. This is a decrease of 2.13% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 13.88% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Lamar had a population of 7,804 people (which is 62.18% of the total population of Prowers County). This makes Lamar the county's most populous community.

The population of Lamar represents 0.16% of the population of Colorado (which has 5,029,196 people), making it the state's 54th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 7,804 people, the population of Lamar decreased 12.01% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 8,869 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Lamar was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Lamar post office opened in 1886.
