La Plata County was founded February 10, 1874. La Plata was created by taking area from Lake and Conejos Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> La Plata had a population of 56,440 people. This is an increase of 9.95% since the last Census (which gave a population of 51,334 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, La Plata represented 1.02% of the total population of Colorado.
