Tehama County was founded in 1856. Tehama was created by taking area from Butte, Colusa and Shasta Counties.

Using the Census estimates for 2008^<1>, Tehama had a population of 61,550 people. This is an increase of 9.65% since the 2000 Census, which gave a population of 56,135 people.

At the time of the 2000 Census, Tehama represented 0.17% of the total population of California, making it the state's 41st most populous county (out of 58 counties).
