Cochise County was founded in 1881 and was created by taking area from Pima County.

Using the Census estimates for 2008^<1>, Cochise had a population of 129,006 people. This is an increase of 9.32% since the 2000 Census, which gave a population of 118,013 people.

At the time of the 2000 Census, Cochise represented 2.28% of the total population of Arizona, making it the state's 7th most populous county (out of 15 counties).
