Jefferson County

The city of Birmingham is primarily located in Jefferson County and is the county seat. A portion of Birmingham extends into Shelby County.

The county had a population of 662,192 people at the 2000 Census. With it's population of 242,820 people, Birmingham contained 36.67% of the Jefferson County total.

In addition, where the community of Birmingham has a population density of 1,619 people per square mile [625 people/km²], Jefferson County averages 595 people per square mile [229.8 people/km²].
