At the time of the 2000 Census, Independence had a population of 113,288 people. This represented 2.02% of the total population of Missouri, making it the state's 4th most populous community.

From the Census estimates^<1> for 2007, Independence had a population of 110,704 people. This is a decrease of 2.28% since the 2000 Census.
